Cheryl E. Leonard (Music Composer, Collaborator) returned last year from creating music from natural sounds in the Antarctic on a grant from the National Scientists Foundation, to work with PYTHIA on A Portrait by Means of the Sun. Cheryl is a composer, performer, improviser and instrument builder. Over the last several years she has focused on creating music and instruments with found natural materials. Many of Leonard’s works explore subtle textures and intricacies of sounds not generally considered musical. Her other interests include collaboration across artistic disciplines, and developing site-specific compositions and instruments. Cheryl holds a BA from Hampshire College and an MA from Mills College, both in music composition.  Her music has been performed at the Exploratorium, Sushi Gallery, Highways, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the San Francisco Butoh Festival, the Big Sur Experimental Music Festival, SoundCulture 96, and the National Conference of the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the U.S., et al.. Her works Instruments in Trees and Ziran have been featured on KQED TV's local arts show Spark, CBS's Evening Magazine, and in Noisy People, documentary about the Bay Area’s music scene. She has been awarded grants from ASCAP, the American Composers Forum (twice), and Meet the Composer, and residencies at the Djerassi Program, Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus, Villa Montalvo and Engine 27. Recordings of her music are available from Great Hoary Marmot Records, NEXMAP, Unusual Animals, Pax Recordings, Apraxia Records, 23 Five Inc, Old Gold Records and The Lab.
